New Project to Develop a Fluorescent Agent for Image-Guided Surgery in Cancer

The project is led by Dr. Mariana Köber and is a joint effort between two leading Catalonian research institutes:
- Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC)
- Institut de Recerca Germans Trias i Pujol (IGTP). The IGTP team is led by Dr. Adrià Bernat (Badalona Applied Research Group in Oncology - B·ARGO), with the involvement of Dr. Sergio Martínez, Head of Gynaecology at Germans Trias Hospital.
The collaborative project has been granted a total budget of €150,000, of which €125,000 is allocated to Nanomol-Bio (ICMAB-CSIC) and €25,000 to Institut de Recerca Germans Trias i Pujol (IGTP). The funding will support activities such as preclinical testing, manufacturing, and the definition of a roadmap for clinical translation and market entry.
The project is set to run from December 2, 2024, to June 1, 2026.
The primary goal of the BRIGHT-GUIDE project is to develop a novel ultrabright fluorescent agent that will enable more precise and effective image-guided cancer surgeries, particularly for ovarian cancer. By improving the visibility of cancerous tissue during surgery, this technology aims to reduce the recurrence rate in ovarian cancer patients and significantly enhance patient outcomes. Furthermore, the potential impact of this innovative technology could extend beyond ovarian cancer, benefiting surgeries for other types of cancer in the future.
